The first question is always ‘Why did no one tell me?’ and the second is ‘Why me?’ but you’re not alone, 17 per cent of people rated this the most embarrassing first date faux pas.

The survey, conducted by dating site datewithamate.com, proved that dates don’t always go smoothly with 51 per cent of us saying we had experienced an embarrassing moment when on a date.

After having food stuck in our teeth, bumping into an ex came in second place with 15 per cent.

This was followed closely with 14 per cent of people admitting they had spilt a drink over their date and a further 12 per cent saying they had made an offensive or inappropriate comment.

Unfortunately, 9 per cent of people admitted to being stood up on their first date, and a further 8 per cent of people made the embarrassing mistake of calling their date by the wrong name.

Seven per cent of us have had to endure the embarrassment of walking out of the toilet with either our flies down or our dress tucked into our underwear.

We all try to look at our best when on a date so the last thing you need is your zip breaking or your heel coming off mid-walk to the bar but 4 per cent of us have had to go through a wardrobe malfunction on a date.

We all worry about introducing our love interest to our parents, so imagine if you ran into them on the first date? This happened to an unlucky 3 per cent of people.

Incredibly, 2 per cent of people fell asleep on a date and one respondent even vomited on their date during their first romantic meeting.

Luckily, it seems we’re all quite tolerant of dating mishaps as 56 per cent of people said they went on a second date with the person from that embarrassing first date.

Luke Pomaro, founder of DateWithaMate.com, said, “It certainly gave us a bit of a chuckle to hear some of the most embarrassing dating moments, particularly as it’s something that most of us can admit to having suffered at some point in our lives.

“However, it was encouraging to find out that the majority of those that had suffered a bit of an embarrassment on their date ended up going on a second date with the same person. Clearly these embarrassments aren’t always bad news, and can even help break the ice a little!

“If something embarrassing does happen, the best thing to do is to laugh it off to clear the atmosphere. No-one wants any awkwardness hanging over them, especially on a first date!”
