A spokeswoman for online dating site for2.co which commissioned the report said, “Women are looking younger now, well into their 40s and 50s and so they are rivals to younger women in terms of attractiveness.

“Added to this the fact that they are NOT pressing men for babies, in the way that a woman in her 20s or 30s would, and also the fact that they probably have much more energy than older men of their own age, and it seems that the cougar/toyboy relationship is a match made in heaven.”

Neither party would lie about their age though, with 92 per cent saying they would be completely honest with the other party.

The spokeswoman said, “Women used to be okay with dating an older man but not a younger one, but the situation has reversed.

“Firstly high-earning women don’t need to look to older men for money anymore, and aspirational women like Madonna, Kylie and Caroline Flack have normalised the behaviour of dating men considerably younger than them.

“Add to this the fact that women are looking much younger for longer, with many in their 40s and 50s passing for 30 year olds, and it looks like the cougar is here to stay.”

Women like to keep their youthful looks and the survey found that they go to extreme lengths to keep themselves on form.

Over half of women said they get their hair done for the date and 46 per cent said they would buy new clothing to make an impact. Incredibly, 4 per cent admit to going on a diet for the date!

Men also make sure to put in the effort, with 18 per cent getting a haircut and 34 per cent buying a new shirt or shoes for the occasion.

Could all the effort just be to get their date into the bedroom? Quite possibly, as 82 per cent of men admitted they would be pushing for sex by the 5th date, compared to 66 per cent of women.

Astonishingly, 8 per cent of men said they would push for sex on the first date but women seen to have a different idea as only 0.5 per cent said they would be bedded on a first date.
