It was once thought that a real gentleman would never let a lady pay for a date but now most men are expecting women to put at least half towards the bill.

When on the first date, 51 per cent of men said they would rather go Dutch with their date and split the bill, compared to the 29 per cent that said they would still happily pay the full amount.

One in five said they would be happy paying for certain aspects of the date, such as a round of drinks, but certainly not the entire date.

Shockingly, the research by FridayFriday.com, showed the 5 per cent of men would be happy to reverse the roles and have women foot the bill on their first date.

A spokesman for the website said, “Social etiquette has always dictated that men pay for a first date, whether it be food, drinks, show tickets or a taxi home – however it seems more men than ever before are choosing to ask for a contribution from their date.

“This may sound a little unromantic but our poll has revealed that for many they simply don’t have as much cash as they may once have done and therefore are keen to ensure their spending doesn’t spiral.”

The number one reason cited for going Dutch was due to increasing financial pressures but most men said that they felt it unfair for them to have to pay the bill and some even found it a little embarrassing.

A further reason was that there was now greater pay equality for men and women, so it only makes sense for women to chip in for the bill.

Another shocking discovery from the survey was that 91 per cent of men said if their date was going poorly, they would ditch in order to save money!

The spokesman assured us that there is no need to worry though, he said, “The results show that whilst chivalry is on the decline it isn’t totally dead with a small group of men determined to pay for a first date, regardless of cost.”
