Helen asks :

There is a guy I have been kind of together for over a year now. When he lived in my country, we met up almost every day, had loads of fun together, even ended up in bed on our second date. Once when we were returning home from a party after having a little row, he asked what's going on between us and i stupidly said that we're just having fun until he leaves, he said that's stupid but i had a bit too much to drink and fell asleep. The topic never came up. But everything continued the same way, I went to visit him in his country, we went hiking, attended his work events together, I met all of his friends including his parents with whom we had dinner with! He has visited me, met my parents, my friends, came with me to my work events, etc. Everything is perfect, except I am in love with him and I want to be in a relationship with him, but I am too scared to ask him, I am quite sure he messes around with other women, that's how men are, right? He has a picture of us on his Facebook page, no sight of other women, but I just know.. He even made a Facebook account for the teddybear he gave me for my birthday and acts like it's a real kid, it's our own inside joke. But every time I try to write something nice to him, like I miss you, he just gets all awkward and doesn't reply, when i create the opportunity for him to be nice and caring towards me, he is teasingly mean, he doesn't give me random presents like guys who like a girl do. His words and actions just aren't the same. He will study in my country starting this fall, so maybe things develop further then? Please tell me I have not been wasting my time on him! I really-really don't know what he wants from me! And men say that women are impossible to understand.. Please give me some advice!

Yin replies

The fact he asked you what is going on with you was probably a lead into him asking you out and the opportunity was missed because of your response. You are basically acting like a couple, doing all the things you normally would (going on dates, having sex) so being in a relationship should not be that much different. Don’t read too much into the Facebook picture as people have pictures of their friends on their page all the time, this could mean he just likes the picture, that said that picture would ward of any other women, as they would automatically assume that he was attached.

Yang replies

Don’t get me wrong if a guy can have a friends with benefits type relationship they will not shy away from this, so it’s bonus for him, but the only way you will know is to ask. Get it out in the open, if he doesn't want anything then keep going as you were (minus the sex, as this will complicate things) or use the time he is near you to form as lasting relationship. If he has been with other women then this is because you are not exclusive, this is only a problem if he is committed to you.
