You may think that reading only benefits you as it’s a solitary activity- but can actually do wonders for your relationship too. Here are just a few reasons why to celebrate National Read Across America Day.
It gives you something to talk about- Conversation can get a bit samey, if you both have a favourite TV show you watch as a twosome and spend most of your time together. You know what's happened so you don't need to go over it again. If you both read a different book you can tell each other about it and add another layer of things you can discuss.
It gives you some well needed 'me time'- All couples need to strike a balance between time together and time apart. Reading can give you some time to do something that's just for you.
BUT you can do it while spending time together- You can read in bed next to one another while touching toes, but still be doing your own thing. It's the perfect way to get the best of both worlds.
Reading gives you time away from screens- If your favourite thing to do as a couple is watch TV while playing on your I phones or tapping on the I Pad, it gives you some rest from the glare of digital devices. A chance to unplug can only be a good thing.
It will help you to sleep better- Many studies have found that staring at a screen late into the night can affect your sleep patterns. There's nothing more disturbing than if one of you sleeps restlessly- than if you both do.
It gives you both some well needed peace and quiet- Your days are likely filled with phones ringing, people chattering and blaring TV screens- reading gives you some time without any background noise to just be.
It's cheaper- Reading costs nothing other than the price of the book- but after that it's free. TV costs money every time you turn it on, so if you're looking to penny pinch- an hour or two reading every night might make a big difference to your bills.
Reading can be inspiring- Reading a romance novel might give you date ideas, a book on diet and fitness might give you the push to improve your health together or a cookery book may encourage you to get your culinary groove on together.
It makes you use your imagination- When you tell your partner what you're reading you can involve them in figuring out what the end might hold, the protagonist's motives or who the guilty party could be. It encourages you both to come up with possible scenarios together. The more extravagant- the better!
It can improve your relationship- If you think you're having trouble in a particular part of your relationship- chances are there's a book out there to give you advice on how to navigate around it. As long as you tell each other what it is and why you're reading such a book- it could help you to resolve some ongoing issues.
