As William and Kate’s first anniversary nears, research from VoucherCodes.co.uk reveals that while Kate can expect to be treated like a princess this year, with gifts of flowers, a meal and jewellery, she’ll have to wait another 25 years before Wills digs deep again.

This year fellow newlyweds will spend an average of £118 on first anniversary gifts, however, the amount they spend marking their big day drops by 15 per cent in the following years.

It’s only when couples reach their 25th wedding anniversary that their budget will increase significantly - to £168.

The study of married couples reveals that other brides celebrating their first anniversary this year are most likely receive a bunch of flowers from their groom, and that happy couples will be heading out for a romantic meal to mark the occasion.

When it comes to marking 25 years together, couples are prepared to break with the norm, with the number one gift being a trip away together.

While two thirds of couples (63 per cent) get each other a gift for their first anniversary, the younger generation is the least likely to spend money, with just over half (55 per cent) of 18 - 24 year olds buying their partner a first anniversary present.

In contrast, older generations, most of whom would have tied the knot many years before Wills and Kate, were the most likely to have bought their loved one a first anniversary gift. Over two thirds (67 per cent) of over 55s reported buying a gift for their husband or wife.

The main reason for not giving presents is still feeling the financial hangover from the wedding (23 per cent), whilst one in ten romantics  claim they simply don’t need to buy each other a gift to demonstrate their love.
