The former 'TOWIE' star has opened up about an "extremely tough" time in her life after she had to call an ambulance last week when her mum, Joan Collins, stopped breathing.

Gemma wrote on her Instagram Stories: "So last week I had the shock of my life when my mum stopped breaking and I called an ambulance and was told to prepare for the worst and would I like to resuscitate her.

"It's been extremely tough but she is stable now and hopefully she will be much better soon."

Fortunately, while Gemma admitted her mum is still "really ill", she revealed Joan is "on the mend".

Speaking on Instagram, she said: "Good morning everyone, I just want to be real with you.

"I've just got out of bed, sun shining, I've got a busy day.

"My mum's really ill at the minute, she's in intensive care.

“It's been a hell of a time, I'm really happy ... well not that happy as my mum's in intensive care but she's on the mend, thank god."

Following a traumatic few days, Gemma then urged her fans to "make every day count".

She added: "No day is promised for make every day count."

Last August, Joan was rushed to hospital with a mystery illness.

Gemma wrote on Instagram at the time: "Such a scary moment when mum come to hospital. Thank you queens hospital Romford for all your doing. Love your parents as hard as you can. Thank you to everyone looking after mum @joancollins1 at QUEENS HOSPITAL ROMFORD. (sic)"

Gemma previously revealed she was in a taxi in London when she received a phone call from Joan, who had been hesitant to tell her what was going on after finding a lump in her breast, before getting the all-clear.

Last year, she told The Sun newspaper: "It was over the phone. I was in the back of a taxi in London and I was like, ‘Are you all right, mum? Where are you?’ - as we say every day, ten times a day.

"She said, ‘Ah I didn’t want to tell you, but I’ve had a lump in my breast. I was like, ‘What?’, and she said, ‘But it’s fine I’ve got the all-clear’. I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Why didn’t you tell me?' "
