Max Thieriot as Dylan in Bates Motel

Fans of classic horror were worried when a television series based on the Psycho film was announced, but they found it to be a welcome addition to the genre as the prequel's plot proved to stand up on its own.

We got the chance to chat to Max Thieriot about his role as the brother of Norman Bates on the show, his feelings going into something with such a cult following and what we can expect from the second season and going forward.

For those who haven't seen the series, what can you tell us about it?

The show follows the early life of 'Psycho' Norman Bates, his mother Norma and brother Dylan. How and why did he become 'Psycho' is what is slowly revealed.

What can you tell us about the character you play?

I play Norman's half brother Dylan. He is a tough, street raised guy with a soft side for family.

Were you nervous to be a part of something that's taking on one of the biggest horror movies in history?

Yes and no. I was less nervous because we were creating a new character so maybe there would be less criticism, but at the same time hoping that the fans would accept an important character that wasn't in the original movie.

Have you always been a fan of the horror and psychological genre?

Yes. Since I was a kid I have loved the genre. I was introduced to it by films like The Exorcist, The Rear Window, Leprechaun and others.

What is it that drew you to this show?

Pretty much everything. The producing and writing team that is in charge, Vera (Farmiga) was attached already, and of course the character I was going to be playing.

How was the chemistry on-set when filming the first season?

Everyone hit it off pretty much instantly. Since then obviously how close we are as a "family" has grown but it was never a doubt that we wouldn't be very close.

Did you ever find yourself taking work home in the sense that some of the scenes were so dark they'd 'haunt' you, so to speak?

Not really. I try to separate the two so I am able to unwind when I get home.

Can you tell us anything about the upcoming second season?

The season picks up where we left off and we run from there. There is more action, drama, death, and love / lovemaking.

Do you have any other projects going on that you can shed some light on?

Not that are official yet. Possibly a historical western piece...

The first season of Bates Motel is available on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
