Thor

Thor has stormed to the top of the UK box office as it took over £5.4 million in it's opening weekend.

Thor is the latest Marvel superhero to find himself on the big screen as Chris Hemsworth takes on the title role in his first major American movie.

The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh the movie boasted an all star cast of Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman as Thor toppled Fast Five.

Fast Five, which sees Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return to the franchise, has enjoyed huge success both sides of the Atlantic but the movie slipped into second place this week.

Insidious was the only other new entry inside the top ten this week as the horror movie opened at number three.

Rio fell two places to this week's number four while Arthur, which had also fallen two, rounded off the top five.

Scream 4 also fell two places this week - falling outside the top five at six while Hop moved down just a single place to seven.

Beastly was one of this week's biggest fallers as it fell three places from five to number eight.

Source Code was down one at nine while Red Riding Hood was the other three place faller at ten.
