Richard E.Grant

Richard E.Grant

From Spice Girls tour manager to Horrid Henry’s Headmaster Brit heartthrob Richard E Grant has played a variety of roles over the years.

His latest offering shows his operatic abilities alongside on screen love interest Sarah Brightman in rom-com First Night.  To celebrate the release of First Night, in cinemas October 14th we take a look at the diverse roles of Richard E. Grant.

Withnail and I - 1987

The film that bought Richard E Grant to peoples attention, Withnail and I, set in late 1960s London, follows the story of two unemployed actors Withnail (Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann) who decide to leave their squalid flat for a peaceful holiday in the countryside.

Things aren’t quite as idyllic as anticipated though when it rains no stop and there’s the unexpected arrival of Uncle Monty, who shows a very keen interest in Marwood.

Jack and Sarah - 1995

Jack and Sarah sees Grant play a widower who loses his wife Sarah during the birth of their baby daughter.

Clueless Jack hires the help of an American novice nanny named Amy (Samantha Mathis) in his bid to bring up baby Sarah alone.  A true tearjerker at heart - keep your hankies at hand!

Spice World - 1997

Joining Sporty, Scary, Baby, Posh and Ginger, Richard E Grant played pushy tour manager Clifford in the hit Spice Girls movie Spice World.

Following the girls around London on their Union Jack bus, the film saw Grant take on a slightly more fun role thrusting him to the forefront of 1990s Girl Power pop culture.

Horrid Henry: The Movie - 2011

The first ever British kid’s movie to be filmed in 3D, Horrid Henry: The Movie starred Anjelica Huston as Henry’s terrifying teacher Miss Battle-Axe, alongside, Rebecca Front as Henry’s headmistress Ms Oddbod and Richard E Grant as a rival headmaster.

There is fun and laugher for all the family in this British classic.

First Night - 2011

Adam (Grant) is a rich industrialist and frustrated opera singer aspiring to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he’s just a City suit living a capitalist dream he decides to stage an opera in his lavish country retreat.

He feels sure the shallow taunting will end once his friends see him in full voice and help him win the hand of Celia (Sarah Brightman) the female conductor he’s been pursuing.

For the rest of the cast and the production Adam brings in the experts and enlists the aid of a troupe of sexy young singers with enough collective sexual tension to light up the stage.

First Night hits cinemas October 14th.
