And there are plenty of them this year as a whole host of actresses have turned in some great performances that are worthy of the award.

Penelope Cruz was last year’s winner for her role in Woody Allen’s comedy Vicky, Cristina Barcelona and she could well bag herself another nomination for her role in Nine.

While the movie is littered with talent; including Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren it’s Cruz’s performance that has so far been getting the recognition.

The movie follows film director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.

For her performance Cruz has been nominated at the Satellite awards and could find herself up for a Golden Globe when nominations are announced next week.

Rachel Weisz is another actress that already has an Oscar to her name for her fabulous performance in The Constant Gardener.

But she is back on the big screen in 2010 with the much talked about The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of Alice Sebold’s popular novel.

She takes on the role of Abigail Salmon who cannot face the rape and murder of her daughter Susie and wants a life different than the one she has.

The movie is already surrounded in Oscar chatter and a string of awards really could come this movie’s way, with Stanley Tucci, Mark Wahlberg and Soairse Ronan could all find themselves in contention.

We all know Anna Kendrick from the Twilight Saga playing Bella’s friend Jessica but in her latest movie Up In The air she really get to flex the acting muscles.

Her performance has grabbed the attention of critics and movie lovers as she was award the best Supporting Actress National Board of Review gong just last week.

Up In The Air is a real awards contender after gaining some momentum on the festival circuit throughout the year.

And while George Clooney is guaranteed a string of nominations don’t be surprised if you find young Anna making a few acceptance speeches of her own.

Precious is the movie that everyone has been talking about since it hit the Sundance Film Festival back at the beginning of the year.

And Mo’Nique could be another of its stars that could find herself in the running for Best Actress; in fact FemaleFirst believes she is a red hot favourite to bag a nomination.

She takes on the role of Mary who abuses her daughter Precious, who is also raped by her father. This hard hitting movie has received rave reviews from the performances for its mainly unknown cast and Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe are both frontrunner this awards season.

Finally Julianne Moore could be another actress in contention for her latest movie A Single Man, directed by Tom Ford.

She takes on the role of Charley who tries to help her friend George, played by Colin firth, get over the death of his partner while trying to work out what she wants from her own life.

The actress has been nominated for an Oscar four times in the past for her performances in Far From Heaven, The Hours, The End of The Affair and Boogie Nights, but she is yet to take home the prize.
