Around a dozen of the creatures were recently spotted by commuters just offshore of the Courtney Campbell Causeway with many of them pulling over to watch the unusual congregation.

According to Fox 13, a news helicopter discovered a herd of manatees engaging in a reproductive practice called a ''mating ball'', which is only seen roughly once every three to five years.

ABC Action News reports that the ritual sees around seven males competing for the attention of a female, which can result in groups of males corralling a smaller number of females into shallow waters.

Meanwhile, the Floida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission noted while the mating ball is rare, manatee mating season runs from March to the end of November.
