Genetics are key to determining whether a person can grow a beard, according to experts.

The findings will ease the concerns of those who are unable to grow face fuzz and it simply depends on a person's genes.

Dermatologist Amy McMichael told Elite Daily: "The largest factor that determines beard growth is really genetics.

"Some [people] simply have genetics such that hair follicles are sparse or hair growth is slow."

McMichael also dismissed suggestions that having low testosterone is a cause for failure to grow facial hair, explaining that sprouting a beard has nothing to do with 'manliness'.

She explained: "Poor beard growth alone is rarely a signal of low testosterone.

"Because testosterone has a role in many other processes, it is likely that other symptoms would be noticed as well if it were low."
