The 1987 Ferrari Mondial was found unintentionally by divers from the fire brigade last month and they worked with police to establish that the vehicle had been stolen.

Officers said: ''Investigations have shown no other crime than the theft of the car.''

Police added that too much time had passed to charge anyone with the crime and added that the vehicle ''is completely rusted and will be scrapped''.

The original owner has been compensated for the loss by their insurance company.

Several social media users suggested that it would be better to put the car on display in one of the Dutch capital's aquariums, where visitors can look at fish in tanks made to replicate Amsterdam's canals.
