A short but exciting new teaser for the six new episodes of The X-Files coming next year has been revealed by FOX, with the first footage of Mulder and Scully on their next investigation included.

Beginning as a collection of highlights from the classic run of episodes, it transitions to new footage of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny making their way through a darkened room after 30 seconds.

Mulder tells Scully: "I believe that what we're looking for is in the X-Files. I'm more certain than ever that the truth is in there."

She replies: "I've heard the truth Mulder. Now what I want are the answers."

Meanwhile, this week kicks off a countdown to the new season, with fans being implored to watch an episode a day (201 episodes in total) from July 7 leading up to the new season's release.

The series revival is to also include series stars Mitch Pileggi and William B Davis, with newcomer Joel McHale stepping into the role of a new, conservative journalist named Tad O'Malley.

O'Malley will become a surprising ally for Mulder when he introduces the former FBI operative to an alien abductee.

It was also confirmed earlier this week that actor Rhys Darby will be making a guest appearance in the series.

The X-Files returns for six new episodes on FOX in the US on Sunday, January 24, 2016.
