The 84-year-old star - who tied the knot with John Playfair in 2016 - has become a regular face on British television screens thanks to her role as a judge on 'The Great British Bake Off' but when teaming up with her husband to film her new ITV show 'Prue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen' at home, she had to explain to her significant other that he was not the one in charge.

Speaking on ITV's 'Lorraine', she told stand-in host Ranvir Singh: "When we did the first show together John was not listening to what the director said, so I said to him 'John, you see that girl? She is the director. The clue is in the name, she directs and you do what you're told!'

"He doesn't take direction."

But the former 'Great British Menu' judge has "given up" on the idea that her husband may pay attention to direction and actually thinks his spontaneity works because nothing in real life ever goes as smoothly as it is often portrayed on screen.

She said: "I've given up on it, he does what he does. And you know what? It works.

"One of the things that is nice about that show, it was on a pretty tight budget and we only had a day for every programme. So we never, ever refilmed anything.

"If I am making a cake and it doesn't quite work, well just say 'Oh,well, it doesn't quite work but never mind, it'll taste delicious.' And we just keep going; in real life, you'd never chuck something just because it wouldn't be perfect in front of the camera.

"You just think 'Well, it's cooking, sometimes it doesn't work!'

"There was one moment where I'm trying to show you how to take a mango skin off of with a glass, it's a really good hack, but it didn't quite work. And I asked John to have a go. It worked perfectly!"
