We've all been there when sex couldn't be further from your mind, but you know that your partner is definitely up for it. They're pulling out the moves and you know you need to come up with an excuse, and fast.

New research, from MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, found that the traditional 'I have a headache' excuse has been knocked from the topspot by something a lot more simple, 'I'm too tired'.

The study of 1,213 women across the UK, was conducted in a bid to discover what, if any, excuses they gave their partner when not feeling 'in the mood' to be intimate with them.

They were intially asked the respondents if they ever fabricated excuses for not being able to be intimate with their partner; to which the majority, 61 per cent, said that they did.

According to the research, the stereotypically common excuse of “I have a headache” was not the most common response given by the respondents to the study. When given a list of possible excuses, 69 per cent of the respondents stated that the excuse they mostly gave their partner was that they were simply ‘too tired’ for sex.

The 61 per cent of respondents who stated that they gave their partner false excuses for not wanting to be intimate were asked to select what excuses they mostly gave from a list of possible options. Below are the top ten ‘sex excuses’, according to the results of the study:

  1. Too tired – 69%
  2. Have to get up early – 61%
  3. Have a headache – 57%
  4. Feel fat – 54%
  5. Don’t have time – 48%
  6. Not in the mood – 47%
  7. Feel ill – 39%
  8. Pretend to be asleep – 33%
  9. ‘Too full’ after food – 28%
  10. Body hair maintenance (ie. haven’t shaved/ waxed) – 27%

More than half, 53%, of the respondents who admitted to inventing false excuses for not wanting to have sex with their partner stated that they believed their partner was ‘aware’ that they were fibbing, but were happy to accept them.

Whereas, two fifths felt a guilty about making up these excuses.

Speaking about the findings, Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said the following: “Being in a relationship, especially a long-term relationship, can lead to both people getting a little lax when it comes to romance. A great way to spice up a relationship is to go out for a lovely romantic meal and spend the whole evening with just each other and no distractions.”
