Every year that single great movie debut performance comes along introducing a new name to the big screen.

And in 2009 that new name is Kate Jarvis as the teenager made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year for her starring role in Fish Tank.

The Essex girl, who had no acting experience, was discovered on a train platform when she was having a row with her boyfriend.

But Andrea Arnold, the filmmaker behind Red Road, took a chance on the teenager and cast her in her new movie Fish Tank, which has so far been a critical success.

The movie follows fifteen year old Mia whose life is turned upside down when her mum brings home a new boyfriend, who immediately takes a shine to Mia.

A drive out to the countryside holds the vague promise that a happy family could be forming but the chemistry between Mia and Conner is palpable.

Is he merely giving Mia the attention she needs or does Connor have more sinister intentions?

The young actress was the toast of the Cannes Film Festival, many believing that she would go on to win the Best Actress award for her performance; losing out to Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Fish Tanks went on to scoop Jury Prize at the festival.

However Jarvis was unable to join the rest of the cast and director on the red carpet in Cannes for her moment in the spotlight after giving birth to her daughter Lily Mae just the week before.

While the youngster isn't currently working on any movie projects with her outstanding performance in Fish Tank she is a name to watch out for in the future.

Fish Tank is released 11th September
