The 'Danish Girl' star - who is expecting his first child with wife Hannah Bagshawe - is aware of how expensive it is to live in London, and while he was fortunate enough not to experience financial hardship when he was beginning his career, he wants to help ease the burden other drama students face by paying their rent.

He told the February edition of Britain's GQ magazine: "The greatest privilege that I had was that my parents lived in London. So when I was out of university and out of work for a year, working in a pub, I didn't pay rent.

"And I get letters from people trying to go to drama school and needing to pay their rent. And so that's something I occasionally do. It's impossibly expensive to live in London."

The 33-year-old star won an Oscar for his portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything' and can next be seen as transgender Lili Elbe in 'The Danish Girl' but he insists he doesn't choose his roles deliberately to be "transformational".

He said: "I think people look at it and go, urgh, you want to try and do something transformational.

"And it's not true - just, if you're lucky enough in your lifetime to get two parts that are interesting and challenging to play, then it's a privilege really."
