Nessa asks :

Hi Lucy,

My boyfriend is okay with me wearing his sister’s hand me down clothes. He hands down his clothes to his sister’s boyfriend. Is it weird that my boyfriend and his sister are okay with their other halves looking like their siblings.

Just because you wear their clothes doesn't mean you look like them. You might wear different combinations and accessorise them differently, which means you likely won't look the same as them.

As long as they are washed from when they used them, there is no harm if you are looking to save money.

If this has been commonplace in their family for years, then they will see it as the norm. If you have not done this in your own family unit then it may seem strange to you.

It is probably more about being resourceful and penny pinching than anything else. If it makes you feel uncomfortable then you don't have to wear the clothes. If it makes them feel better- you could accept them and still wear what you have bought so you don't have to make a big deal out of it.

Perhaps you could use the clothes they have given you as something to wear around the house- to clean or decorate in so you can still get some use out of them.

Or if you want to stop the habit of them passing on their old clothes- perhaps you could tell them that they don't fit you well and that you would feel better if they gave them to someone else who would benefit more from their donations?
