Valentine’s Day is supposed to be more romantic than any other day in the year, so you would think that it would be manic on dating sites? Right? Wrong!

Valentine's Day on Female First

Lovestruck have found, despite the previous 5 weeks of craziness, today, there is a massive drop in people signing up and that singles have a few things they would like to get off their chest about today of all days.

42% of Lovestruckers said that they would not be spending tonight on their computer looking for a date, as most believed that it’s a day for couples rather than singles. 32% went as far as to say that they dreaded the day.

Dating expert Hayley Quinn explains, "I think everyone can remember a year at school where not getting a Valentine's Day card felt heart-breaking. Even today having to reflect on the fact you're single can be painful for those seeking a partner. To go out looking for a date on Valentine's day portrays an image that you're desperate to be partnered off: the reality is many of our generation are happy to be single and don't feel in a rush to partner up."

Many assume that its women who dread the day- when actually- men feel just as uneasy about it too. 52% said that they are expected to pay for the entire night out and so resent the fact that tradition gets in the way of romance. 38% felt that there was pressure to buy extravagant gifts rather than cheap and cheerful expressions of affection. 53% of women in the US said that they would leave their partners if they did not receive a gift, so the perceived pressure is  justified.

Hayley comments, "People have got wise to restaurants, shops and card companies bumping up their prices so it’s no surprise almost 40% of singles and this percentage of men see it as a day where only commercial enterprises will gain."

Hayley adds, "Valentine's day is definitely geared towards couples with singles preferring to spend time doing something nice for themselves, catching up with friends or ignoring it all together. The 'anti-Valentines' trend is something events companies have noticed too with the vast majority using February 14th to have parties in celebration of everything but romance."

Zagats found that couples are having more dinners out, making Valentines lack the novelty it used to. The Russians spend more on meals out than any other country in the world- so the appeal might have well and truly gone out the window by the time tonight rolls around!
