It’s get the endorphins going- Whatever DIY you do- it gets you moving- so as soon as you start- it should put both of you in a better mood. So you’re setting yourself up with the right attitude and for a good day’s worth of graft.

You are working towards the same destination- If you own a home together- chances are you both want it to be the best it can be- so you are both motivated to make it shine. If you share the same determination and common goal, then you will push yourselves to deliver.

You can teach each other new skills- If one of you is a God at glossing while the other knows a little thing or two about laminate flooring- you can share your knowledge, so you’ll make the perfect team.

It saves you money- If you pool all your money together- you are going to make it go further if you buy in the materials and do things yourself rather than paying someone else to do the job. Which means more disposable income to enjoy yourselves once you’re done!

It gives you time to talk- Once you’re confident in what you’re doing and don’t have to think too much about it- you can use the time to talk about your relationship, what your plans are for the future or simply what you’re having for your tea. The topic is up to you.

It breaks the mould- If you’re in the habit of watching TV, going to the cinema and eating out together, this will give you something else to enjoy in each other’s company. Changing up your routine will help you appreciate just how many different things you can do as a couple.

It gives you time away from digital devices- You can’t watch a movie or play on your phone while you’re doing some DIY so you both get a rest from the distraction of screen time.

It’s inspirational- If you DIY in one room of the house, it might encourage you to do something with another space in your home too. Something you might not have thought of until you got into the mindset for change.

It increases the value of your home- If you are looking to sell up or simply make your home worth more- this is one way you can do it without spending a lot of cash on labour to achieve the finished article.

It makes you proud of where you live- When people come around and compliment you on your home- you can say- ‘we did that’- rather than ‘we paid for someone to do that for us’- a much less satisfying response. Your bond with your home will increase too because it has a little piece of you both imprinted on it.
