All over the country families are taking advantage of the ‘snow day’ by donning their hats, scarfs and wellies and getting out into the snow.

But many married couples are choosing to spend the day a different way by logging onto extra marital affairs dating sites, hoping to find an illicit lover to cheat with.

The fact that it’s Blue Monday doesn’t help either. Blue Monday is named to be the most depressing day of the year down to debt from Christmas, bad weather and failing at New Year’s resolutions.

Dating sites such as AshleyMadison.com and IllicitEncounters.com have both seen a huge rise in the number of sign-ups over the past few days due to bad weather and are expecting it to continue with today being Blue Monday.

AshleyMadison have seen a 626 per cent rise in UK traffic this week and IllicitEncounters have also reported hundreds of new members since the bad weather hit the UK.

Incredibly, this is thought to continue as the snow gets worse over the next week.

Some theories as to why people are signing up due to the bad weather have been established, one being the fact that many of us are forced to work from home.

Spokeswoman for Illicit Encounters, Vanessa Philips, says, “Many join the site when they are forced to work from home due to being trapped in by the snow. Perhaps their preference is to sign up away from the prying eyes of colleagues, or maybe they look to join to escape family frustrations.”

Noel Biderman, CEO of Ashley Madison, agrees with Vanessa and believes it is due to us being cooped up at home.

He says, “Clearly people are taking this opportunity to enjoy themselves online because they are stuck inside.”

So is it the weather? Or is it just the excuse that those who are unhappy in their marriage have been waiting for?

January is the most depressing month for many of us, we’re on a downer from the Christmas celebrations, we’re all on diets to get rid of the extra weight, yet all we want to be is eat comfort food because it’s cold.
