The pool, named Deepspot and located near the capital city of Warsaw, welcomed the public for the first time last weekend and is 45 metres deep.

It is filled with 8,000 cubic metres of water - equivalent to more than two dozen Olympic-size swimming pools.

For those who do not want to get wet, there is a transparent tunnel where people can look at the pool without donning their trunks.

Diving instructor Przemyslaw Kacprzak told AFP: "There are no magnificent fish or coral reefs here so it is no substitute for the sea but it is definitely a good place to learn and to train in order to dive safely in open water.

"It's like a kindergarten for divers."
