The iconic Italian city is one of the world's most popular tourists destinations, but in a bid to ease the strain, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has proposed the radical measure.

The idea will be voted on next month and could soon form part of the city's #EnjoyRespectVenezia campaign, which welcomes tourists but also insists they must adhere to Venice's rules.

Mayor Brugnaro explained: ''The aim is to create more of a deterrent to people who think they can come to the city of Venice and do what they want, not respecting the city, urban decorum, and public safety.''
