An unusual breed of chickens lay green eggs and have blue meat.

Schijndelaar chickens largely resemble other chickens, but a rare genetic condition causes the strange colouring of their eggs and insides.

The breed was created in the Dutch town of Schijndel a decade ago and occurs when genetic mutations in the chicken results in excessive accumulation of black pigment in the skin and organs.

One of the breed's inventors, Ruud Kassenbrood, told local media: "The breed came to existence a decade ago while ESKV members enjoyed a beer together.

"On a beer mat we wrote down the breeds we had to combine and from that we created a chicken that could lay green eggs.''

Despite their odd appearance, the eggs and meat produced are the same as from any other chicken.
