Britain's first Dutch-style roundabout in Cambridge had to shut for three nights, although the local council insists that the design - which prioritises cyclist and pedestrians - played no part in the accident.

In a statement, Cambridgeshire County Council said: ''A car collided with a Belisha beacon column, causing it to lean slightly. The driver failed to stop at the scene.

''The closures are to assess the damage and carry out the necessary repairs. The design of the roundabout played no part in the accident.''

However, the RAC suggests it ''may well be an unusual junction to navigate in the first instance''.
