A kangaroo has been born with all-white fur due to a rare mutation.

The red kangaroo was recently born to parents Rosie and Boomer at a New York zoo and staff made the discovery as the joey was removed from its mother's pouch for a medical inspection.

The zoo explained that the animal's unique colouring was caused by a mutation called leucism, which causes a partial loss of pigmentation. The kangaroo's eyes have black pigmentation which means it is leucistic rather than albino.

In a Facebook post, the zoo wrote: "We are not aware of any leucistic red kangaroo in the United States; proving just how rare this occurrence is! That said, we are now working with professionals in the zoological community to see just how unique of a blessing this little one is!"
