The animal, named Lieni, was spotted roaming in the Austrian city of Salzburg by a woman after fleeing from the abattoir, she then called animal charity Gut Aiderbichi to inform them of the cow's presence.

The charity was able to track down the terrified animal and informed the owner they would pay compensation for the meat lost as a result.

Lieni will now spend the rest of her days living in happiness on the Alpine pasture.

Dieter Ehrengruber, a spokesperson for the animal charity, said: "We turned up just in time. The farmer who owned the escaped cow had already started looking for her to bring her back to the slaughterhouse, and we were lucky to be able to secure her as a new resident."
