Hi there Lucy,

I have a rash on my pubic region. I do not shave, I get professionally waxed (Hollywood) every four weeks. For as long as I can remember, I have had an embarrassing rash. It is red and sometimes lumpy. It can develop spots that can be burst. How do I get rid of this?

Waxing is generally better than shaving for reducing ingrown hairs in the pubic region, however, it's still possible to have a few in that area post waxing. Are there hairs in the spots when they burst?

It could be contact dermatitis which is caused by an allergic reaction to; the soap you use to wash yourself with, a detergent you use to wash your clothes in, perhaps your underwear or clothes are too tight or the material is irritating this region. Could you be allergic to the wax itself? Or the cream the beautician applies afterwards?

If you use condoms- you may be allergic to latex. It might be worth making a note of when it's at its worst so you can try and connect it with a product or an item of clothing.

Another possibility is that you have a yeast infection if the area is itchy, which is causing you to scratch- resulting in the bumps. This can be caused by something as simple as excessive sweating or wearing a wet swimming costume for a while after you get out the pool.

UTIs (urinary tract infections) can present themselves as a rash combined with redness and itching too.

Some people get dry skin around their pubic area- however the majority of dry skin is a result of a fungal infection- there are over the counter creams- but you should consult your doctor rather than self-diagnosing.

Another possibility is an STI- if you are sexually active- it would be wise to cease all sexual contact with your partner until you have seen a health professional. I would advise you to see one anyway if you have had this for 'as long as you can remember' as they will be able to run some further tests if needs be.
