jeaniebeanie asks :

Hi Lucy,

I am extremely overweight and I don't know what to do. I have tried every diet. I am only 20 years old and it's unhealthy I always dream of what it would be like to be slim and healthy. I just don't have the will power. They say 'if you want something bad enough, you'll get it' but I just can't. I don't want to have surgery but I feel there is no other option. Please help before my weight gets anymore out of hand.

Hi Jeaniebeanie,

It is very hard to lose weight, although many people underestimate how difficult it is; you are fighting an addiction, so it can be as powerful as alcohol or drugs for the person who feels they can’t live without it.

I know you have said you have tried every diet, but have you tried one with a personal counsellor? If you have been to diet clubs with many other women- this might not the type that is best suited to you as you don’t have that one to one contact. If you feel like you are going through your journey with one other person then this could help you to stick to plan.

You can also book in to see a nutritionist at your local doctors who can offer a similar service- you can get regular weigh ins and you can work through an eating plan together and exercise regime.

Try to remember that you are the one who has the control, not anyone else- as it is often easy to blame others for our eating habits.  You do have the will power, but you are surrendering to an impulse right now- so you just need to find it within you.

A good rule is every time you feel hungry, have a drink as hunger is sometimes actually thirst that your body is misinterpreting. Try to think of bad foods as the things that are taking you further away from your goal rather than closer to it. Swap your sweet snacks for fruit so you are still getting that sugar hit, but it’s all natural, rather than refined.

It’s all about little steps towards change- if your try to do it all at once then it will make it harder on yourself- small manageable changes are easier to stick to and often you don’t notice them as much so you don’t feel as deprived. Start with one day- if you can do one day, then you can do two and so on- food is only a few moments of pleasure- feeling good about yourself is the tastiest feeling of all! Good luck x
