Esther asks :

Hi Lucy,

I need to clear my mind. I had non-penetrative sex when I was young and now am older and want to know if I am a virgin

Hi Esther, thanks for getting in touch!

I need to clear my head!

I need to clear my head!

If you didn’t have penetrative sex then you are still classed as a virgin by most heterosexuals. Some cultures and people of different sexual orientation would class oral sex, anal sex and mutual masturbation as losing one’s virginity, however most would class vaginal penetration by the penis as the only way to lose your virginity. Virgin simply means ‘a sexually inexperienced’ woman so that is why the definition has become blurred because different people take a number of meanings from this phrase.

Oral and anal sex still have the risk factors that vaginal sex does, so you can still catch STIs from having oral or anal sex. If you engaged in either of these activities, it may be worth getting checked out for any STDs at your local GUM clinic, if you were not sure of the person’s sexual past.

Good luck and if you have any more questions please get back in touch.
