How important is intimacy in a relationship?

70% of British women say sexual intimacy makes them feel more emotionally connected to their partner

According to a survey* by Vagisil ProHydrate, 70% of British women say sexual intimacy makes them feel more emotionally connected to their partner, two thirds (63%) wish they could spend more quality time together, while 93% are at their happiest when their relationship is going well.

For many British women, feeling close to their partner is important; 85% of women say their partner is their best friend and 67% confide in them more than anyone. In fact, it takes just a day for 60% of women to start missing their partner; for 15% of us only a couple of hours are too long to be apart.

Yet, nearly half of women (48%) rate their sex lives as average or below; this is even higher (54%) for those suffering with intimate dryness. We all know relationships can be tested, but 84% of sufferers say vaginal dryness has a negative effect on their sex life and over a third (40%) wish they could enjoy intimacy the way they used to; a fifth confess they avoid being intimate with their partner and often worry about dryness during intimate moments.

Sufferers are not alone; according to the survey* over a third of women have suffered from intimate dryness. This can affect more than just intimate areas; more than 70% of the women said that vaginal dryness has a negative effect on their confidence and 24% felt less sexually attractive.

"Vaginal Dryness is a silent nightmare for many women. It's most often caused by hormonal changes - a drop in oestrogen affects the amount of natural lubrication in the vagina, making it dry, irritated and sore. As well as the physical discomfort, vaginal dryness can cause emotional distress too, with women unable to have sex which can cause feelings of guilt or isolation".

"While the causes of vaginal dryness are often a natural part of life, the symptoms don't have to be. There are many ways to ease the discomfort quickly and easily."

"Sex is a great bond in a relationship and can often express what a thousand words can't. Losing this connection can make couples feel distanced from each other. Despite this, the research shows that 41% of women have not sought a solution to the problem, but there are products out there that can help." Kate Taylor, Sexual Wellness Expert
