Infrared was originally published in French and then translated to English but Nancy Huston really shouldn't have bothered.
Earlier this month Nancy was awarded the Bad Sex Award for her efforts in Infrared, one of the least coveted awards in the literary world.
The award was created in 1993 to highlight 'crude, badly written, or perfunctory use of passages of sexual description in contemporary novels'.
Infrared won the award for many reasons but this one passage stood out in particular for the judges, "Oh the sheer ecstasy of lips and tongues on genitals, either simultaneously or in alternation, never will I tire of that silvery fluidity, my sex swimming in joy like a fish in water, my self freed of both self and other, the quivering sensation, the carnal pink palpitation that detaches you from all colour and all flesh."
The novel is centred on Rena Greenblatt, a photographer who liked to take infrared pictures of her lovers.
