Today is #CharityTuesday so we thought we would urge couples everywhere to give to a good cause and exactly why it can do you the world of good as a pair.

You have two incomes

You have more money when you pool your wages together rather than as an individual so there is bound to be something you can spare for a charitable cause. Discuss one thing you could sacrifice- like a drink at the pub once a week or cutting your cinema trips down to one rather than two a month- and donate what you would usually spend to a charity instead. It will make you realise your money can stretch further than you thought.

It gives you a chance to have a good clear out

You don't have to donate money if you can’t spare any- but giving away your old clothes, bric-a-brac and general unwanted items in your home to a charity shop is just as good. Your joint space will feel cleansed and the sale of the goods you give away will help someone in need.

It puts things into perspective

The money you donate can buy far more for a person in need than it can for you. So many charities ask for as little as £2 and with that they work miracles. What you might spend on a lottery ticket could help give someone fresh water, shelter, medicine or food. Suddenly, the food on your plate, the shower you take on a morning and the water you use to wash your clothes in all seem like an extravagance.

It makes you enjoy simpler things together- When you think about the things you have as a couple compared to what others own- suddenly that shopping trip, eating out and drooling over a new car all seem pointless. What matters is that you have each other and your health and happiness.

It can help with your own finances- If you commit to donating some money on a regular basis it can encourage you to look more closely at your income and outgoings, what you can spare, what you can save and where to make cutbacks.

It sets a good example for your children- If you already have children or you plan to some day- it is something positive you can pass down to them when they start to earn their own money.

It gives you something new to talk about- Generally, charities send out emails, updates and flyers about what they are up to and how your money is being spent. If you both decide to donate to two different charities, then you can talk about them together and strike up a new line of conversation in your home.

It can be in memory of someone you both loved- If either of you have lost someone close to you like a parent, grandparent, friend or sibling- donating to a cause that raises money to cure the thing they passed away from can help other families not have to suffer in the same way.

It reflects your inner values- If you both share the same values for a better environment, clean water for all, to stop animal cruelty, to prevent abuse- whatever it might be- the charity you donate to reflects the couple you are and the issues that are important to you.

It helps you meet other like-minded couples- You are not the only ones to feel passionate about a charity and if you donate your time instead of your money- you will meet other couples who are just as keen to help as you. You might even make a lifelong friendship with other couples because of the charity you support.
