Ever wondered why you’ve been ghosted before? New research from Badoo, the world’s largest dating app of over 350 million users, reveals 1 in 5 Brits admit their dating disasters are more often than not down to the person not living up to their profile picture in the flesh.

Georgina Jones, Marketing Manager at Badoo, gives her lowdown on the five best ways to make your online dating profile picture a true reflection of yourself rather than a dating turn-off.

No room for the trout pout – We may all have a best side or favourite pose, but our research shows that replicating the celebrity favourite ‘duckface’ or ‘trout pout’ makes 42 per cent of online daters swipe left

Fitness fakes beware - Clichéd check-ins can be a real turn off, so make sure the places you’re pictured reflect where you actually like to hang out. Gym junkies take note, the classic ‘work out selfie’ makes 20 per cent of Brits ignore an online dating profile

Live in the present, not the past – We all like to reminisce about the days when we looked younger and perhaps more toned, but online profile photos should represent what you look like today, not six years ago under a particularly flattering light

Go solo – You might feel more confident in a crowd, but group shots are a real dating turn off. It may be enticing to add an air of mystery around who is the potential suitor in the pack, but it makes one in ten online daters look the other way

Ease on the airbrushing – You may have had hours of fun with the dog filter, flower crown and beautifying every pic you’ve taken on snap chat, but filters aren’t necessarily a girl’s best friend. Our research shows 19 per cent of Brits will ignore a potential dater if they suspect they’ve filtered their profile pic

Try before you buy – You don’t only have to rely on a profile picture and ‘about me’ section. Badoo allows you to speak to your potential date by video chat so you can find out if your match’s smile is as charming as their profile picture suggests

Dating, whether online or in person, is all about presenting a true reflection of yourself – that’s the best way to make authentic connections and avoid any dating disasters.

It may sound obvious but it’s important your profile picture resembles the real you without the distraction of a trout pout, a flattering filter or your entire friendship group to keep your potential date guessing.

That’s one of the main reasons we launched our in-app video chat feature to allows daters to get a true feel for someone, before they commit to any meet-ups in real-life. It also saves on the hefty bar tab!

Badoo is available to download via the App Store and GooglePlay Store. Users must have had a back-and-forth conversation before they can launch live video chat.
