The Alien franchise is one that’s entertained audiences for years, ever since the release of the original movie all the way back in 1979, which saw Sigourney Weaver in the lead role as Officer Ripley – a character that would go on to become one of the most iconic in sci-fi history. Now it seems that the original trilogy of flicks may have just been the beginning, with many more planned for cinematic release.

According to a report from ComingSoon.net, series director Ridley Scott said: “There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien. If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more.”

Scott also revealed that the film that comes after Alien: Covenant will be called Alien: Awakening, with the story set between the events of Prometheus and Covenant.

The comments will come as a welcome surprise to fans of the franchise, who will surely help ensure that the latest instalment of the series does well when it hits the big screen later this year. Last entry Prometheus took in over $400 million in the box office, so Alien: Covenant will be expected to go above and beyond that amount when it does eventually drop.

Offering an all-new adventure and journey through Covenant, Scott will tell the story of a crew new to audiences, bound for a remote planet which they THINK is an uncharted paradise. Upon arriving however, they’ll quickly discover that all isn’t as it seems, and the threat that’s waiting for them is more than prepared for battle.

Knowing that Scott already has plans for many more movies in the series is very reassuring. His recent releases have been huge critical successes, so it’s going to be interesting to see what’s right around the corner. In saying that, the director has also had major flops on his hand, so let’s hope he’s not jumping ahead of the gun on this one.

One thing’s for sure. The Alien franchise is one that’s going to go down in history no matter what happens.

Alien: Covenant comes to cinemas and IMAX in the UK on May 12, 2017.
