Though it’s only spent three weeks in the box office in Mexico, Disney Pixar’s new release Coco has become the highest-grossing film of all time in the country, setting the international box office record in Mexico’s local currency after taking in 827 million pesos; around $43.1 million. Celebrating the true phenomenon, a new UK trailer has launched, which you can check out in all its glory below:
Featuring two very different and distinct worlds, Coco delves into both The Land of the Living and The Land of the Dead, as aspiring musician Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) and his family continue to live their everyday, routine life in the charming town of Santa Cecilia. Inspired of course by Mexico, bringing the feel of the great city to the movie was something very important for director Lee Unkrich.
He explained: “The story of Coco is inspired by Mexico’s people, cultures and traditions. The people of Mexico made us think about our own families, our own histories and how that makes us who we are today. We are grateful for the opportunities afforded to us, and we can honestly say we are different people as a result of our research.”
Though he’s a youngster with dreams and ambitions of making it big in the world of music, Miguel lives in a family that has a generations-old ban on music, so making it big like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz (voiced by Benjamin Bratt) looks to be the toughest challenge he’ll ever face.
Still, desperate to prove his talent, he finds himself caught up in a series of mysterious events that eventually see him venture into The Land of the Dead. There, he meets trickster Héctor (voiced by Gael García Bernal) and together, the pair go off on a real adventure of discovery and insight, as Miguel learns the truth behind his family’s history.
Coco comes to the UK with advance screenings from January 13, 2018, with the film hitting the big screen across the country on January 19, 2018.
