It’s hard to believe that we’re already halfway through 2017. We’ve seen Donald Trump become the President of the United States, Theresa May destroy her own UK government majority and a slew of incredible movies hit the big screen. Whittling down those films to the best 5 of the year to-date is a tough task, but someone’s got to do it! Here are, in our humble opinion, The 5 Best Movies Of 2017 So Far…
1. Split
M. Night Shyamalan finally made a successful return to the industry with American psychological horror-thriller, Split. Starring James McAvoy in the leading role as a man with 23 personalities, his character is soon compelled by one of them to abduct three teenage girls. What follows is a brilliant romp through an often terrifying adventure for the supervillain at the heart of the drama. Its brilliance continued when Shyamalan revealed it was a standalone sequel to his 2000 movie Unbreakable, and the director has now revealed that a third film in the series called Glass will be released in 2019, combining the casts of both Split and Unbreakable.
2. Get Out
Get Out is the horror movie that managed to put the genre back on the map, with director Jordan Peele not only telling a psychological horror tale, but one that tackles the sometimes-taboo topic of racism and culture. The story follows a young African-American man’s weekend at his white girlfriend’s family manor, but his integration into the family isn’t something that he would have ever expected in the modern world. A fantastic commentary that forces the viewer to look inward on themselves and question whether or not we have equality in today’s world.
3. Wonder Woman
DC’s Amazonian Princess finally made her way to the big screen this summer, proving that you don’t have to be a male superhero to make big waves in the box office. Gal Gadot leads the charge as the titular hero, bringing the DC Extended Universe back from the brink of destruction following the less-than-brilliant critical reception to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Now with a sequel confirmed, and director Patty Jenkins confirmed to make a comeback for the follow-up, this incredible release is serving as the launching pad for what should be an amazing future.
4. Baby Driver
Director Edgar Wright returns to the Director’s Chair for critically-acclaimed new flick Baby Driver, in cinemas now. Most of the movie is set to the beat of an incredible soundtrack, with old school tunes mixed in with modern beats, allowing the film’s lead Baby (Ansel Elgort) to showcase his ability as the best getaway driver in the business. Elgort stars alongside an all-star cast made up of Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx. Sitting with an incredible 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is a summer must-see.
5. Logan
Set in the near future, Logan serves as the final chapter for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, with the character taking care of an ailing Professor X in a hideout deep on the Mexican border. Hoping to stay hidden from the world, Logan’s attempts to leave his legacy in the past are foiled when a young female mutant with similar ‘talents’ to his arrives on the scene, pursued by dark forces. Doing his best to protect her, the hero faces his toughest challenge of all time. Directed by James Mangold and also starring Patrick Stewart as Professor X, alongside Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant and Dafne Keen, the movie picked up some incredible reviews upon release, and it’s easy to see why once you’ve watched the flick. Logan is available now on digital download and hits 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 10.
